Most directors think of the stage as a platform on which to display action, whereas I consider it a reverberation chamber which amplifies and projects the music of the action so it can reveal the full range of its overtones. My stage is an enclosed territory - whatever happens onstage bounces off the walls of the set, and is reflected back and forth between the objects that are positioned inside that space.
