The line is a means to mediate the quality or timbre of a situation, and has a structure which is quick and abstract and more or less thinkable, but it's the tonality or, if you want, wholeness of a situation that is what I'm trying to get at. My intrusions are usually modest, perhaps because it seems like it's that first moment when things start to coalesce that is interesting.

Draw a map for me. Go on draw. Show me which roads are safe, which places I may sleep in without fear for my life. Tell me which of these cities still function and who lives in them. Does the phone system operate round here? Show me the places where I can still fall in love, show me the places where I can still believe in something. Would this be a good place to raise a kid? Would this be a good place for a party?
