Der Begriff Kanon (m., Plural Kanones, v. lat.: canon Norm, Regel, aus griech.: kanon Richtschnur, Regel, Messstab; v. arab.: qanah Rohr) bezeichnet

• in der Musik die strengste Form der Polyphonie. Eine Stimme wird von den anderen zeitversetzt imitiert. Abwandeln kann sich einzig die Stufe auf der begonnen wird.

• bildungssprachlich eine musterhafte Liste oder Zusammenstellung, eine Aufstellung von Inhalten, die allgemein als für ein bestimmtes Fachgebiet wesentlich empfunden werden.

• in einer Religion die als verbindlich erklärte Liste heiliger Schriften, im Christentum z.B. der Kanon des Neuen Testaments, siehe auch: Biblischer Kanon

• in der bildenden Kunst die Regeln für die Proportionierung (des menschlichen Körpers)

• in der Mathematik die allgemeine Lösung einer Aufgabe, nach der dann spezielle Probleme gelöst werden können. Das Adjektiv kanonisch bezeichnet eine Vorgehensweise bzw. eine Lösung, die sich selbstverständlich aus der Problemstellung ergibt.

A cannon is a modern day rifled machine gun with a calibre of 20 mm or more (see autocannon). "Cannon" derives from the Latin canna (a tube).
